Our story,
Why I chose to teach, and still do
By Kathryn Billings

My love of dance started at the age of 3 when my mum sent me to ballet, and the more I grew up, the more I loved to dance. When I was 18 and deciding which route my life should take, I realised I wanted to keep on dancing. I had planned a career in nursing, but I knew I would never be able to fit dancing around the shift patterns and I wasn't ready to give it up.
Luckily, I found an amazing course at the Royal Academy of Dance, where I gained so much knowledge that goes beyond dancing, including anatomy and physiology, child pedagogy, choreography, dance history and Benesh Notation. Plus, I got to dance every day!
When I started my school, I wanted the enjoyment and love of dance to be passed on to the children. I love seeing them learn new things and progress after working so hard on a new step or routine. Not everyone will go on to be a professional dancer, and it's not always about that: it's about teaching children happiness, discipline, fun, and having friends who love what you do too.
As the school grows, I can't be at every class, and that's why I love doing the shows. I see the excitement on the children's faces and get to see all of our pupils in one place.
